Points of interest B - East
1. THE ZLÍN FOREST CEMETERY (2 km)

Established at the beginning of the 1930s according to the design of architect F. L. Gahura. The initial idea comes from Dr. R. Gerbec, who was a city doctor at that time. The forest cemetery was conceived in the style of a right-angle grid as a centraI cemetery for the surrounding area of Greater Zlín. It is dominated by a stone cross with Gahura's statue of crucified Christ at the point where the cemetery axis cross. It was consecrated on AII Saints day in 1932. Mr. Tomáš Baťa Sr. and A. Brouček were one ofthe first ones buried here. From 1978, a crematorium became a part of the cemetery, whose author is architect Jiří Čančík. The area of the cemetery covers approximately 21 hectares.

The mineral waters have been used to cure various ailments since 1742 and at the beginning ofthe 20th century, a spa complex has been built. At the present time there is the hotel building on the near-by hilltop together with recreation centre. The Kostelec hotel and spa are situated near Zlín and reachable by mass transit, situated in beautiful surroundings at the foot hills of the Hostýn and Vizovice Hills. The hotel is for the spa and hotel clientele's use, together with swimming pool, tennis, golf course, gym and indoor golf, as well as other recreational and relaxation facilities, which is available to its clients on year-round basis. During the summer months, an outdoor heated pool is at the hotel guesťs disposal. The hotel offers spa treatment, sports namely the golf course, together with regular disco, or live music dances. A bicycle path is near-by for those so inclined.
3. ŠTÍPA (7 km)

The dominant of the Štípa village is the Baroque cathedral of the Virgin Mary, which is the imaginary Iink between pilgrimage sites - Hostýn and Provodov. The corner stone of the Štípa church was laid in 1616. The church was finished in 1762. Two years later, a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary was brought here. The statue's origins are unknown. The statue is clad in precious cloth, decorated with gold, silver and gems. The cathedral is considered one of the largest and the most beautiful in the region. The Štípa cemetery has a chapel with the crypt of the Seilern blue bloods (cca. 1905).

To the south-east from the town is the wind mill called "Větřák" near municipal number 130, to the right from the road between Štípa and Hvozdná. The windmill was built between 1858 - 60 by an old settler, Mr. Christian Kovář. He had fabricated the interior equipment of the milion his own, with the help of his son Joseph. The mill served the surrounding villages until WWII, when it was sealed. But even then the mill kept busy, milling grain into flour. After WWII, the mill was used for a while. In 1964, the mill was taken away from the owner Mr. Rudolph Kovář by the state. At the present time, the mill has been returned to the son or Mr. Rudolph Kovář. The mill is a valuable proof of folk building activities and the on ly surviving such sample of this kind in the Zlín's district. The mill has the entire original preserved interiorequipment.



4. ZOOLOGICAL GARDEN AND CHATEAU LEŠNÁ (7 km)

This unique nature reserve, covering some 52 hectares with an English style park and romantic chateau, free-roaming deer, mountain goats and elk range, is a rarity among European zoological gardens. Fairy tale, Art Nouveau style chateau from 1887 1894 with the latest amenities ofthe period is decorated with rich interior woodcarvings, inlaid furniture, china collection, paintings and souvenirs from countless trips abroad. It represents today a unique architectural heritage building with permanent exhibition of period home furnishings culture. The extensive English style park from 1884 -1888 has, from the original Baroque park, many a rare woods from Europe, eastern Asia and North America, together with pavilions, free roaming animals' range and bird aviaries.
[img=2] The Lešná gardens have also a long tradition in animal husbandry. Although the private zoo of the Seilern family had disappeared at the end of WWII, it was replaced by Zoo Lešná, opened in 1948. At the present time, there are 240 types of animals. There are secured parking lots and inside the gardens, the visitor has the opportunity to grab a bite to eat and rest; there is a children's play area for the little ones, together with the opportunity for them to ride a horse or a pony. The zoo has approximately 20 cultural programs, guided animal feeding, round trip on a min i train, evening visits, souvenir sales, chi1dren's competitions and school excursions.
5. THE LUKOV CASTLE (9 km)

The village of Lukov is dominated by an large, gothic castle, which dates to the first half of the 13th century. During 1626, this castle was seized and destroyed by the Wallachian rebels and from 1870 on, the castle stands abandoned. The extensive forecastle is separated from the castle proper by a deep moat. Massive bridge supports, the palace ruins, towers and walls surrounding it is all that remains. The partially reconstructed medieval castle is surrounded by beautiful natural scenery of beech wood and sandstone rock, which is used by mountain climbers for training. The road leading to the castle has a statue of St. John Nepomuk. The village under the castle has an old brewery building, parish church of St. Joseph (1812) and a Tuscullum villa dating from the 19th century, converted to a hotel it is today.



6. THE KLEČŮVKA CHATEAU (3 km)

The hill range on the left bank of the Dřevnice river is where you find the village of Klečůvka; today it is part of Zlín and is its easternmost part of its administrative region. The village was separated in 1662 from the Lukovský estate and became an independent feudal estate. The castle's owner was a knight, one Sir Hans Zehentner von Reichersdorf. The local chateau, located at an elevation above the village, dominates the scenery. At the present time, it serves as the State's District Archive.
7. SLUŠOVICE (12 km)

The oldest written record in chronicles about the town of Slušovice comes from 1562. During the 1970s and 1980s, the local farm operation has seen a tremendous expansion and growth (the Agrocombinate Slušovice), with extensive housing, industrial and sports facilities development which followed. In 1996 Slušovice were given a city status.
Slušovice became famous for is horseracing. The race track was built in 1981. This has replaced a disused and unsuitable race track in Vizovice. The DERBY Centrum building is the dominant feature of the place, which is the home of the racing commission and referees during the racing season. Otherwise it is a permanent discotheque. The horse races' park visitors have open tribunes at their disposal, but because the entire complex has a natural amphitheatre look, you can watch the races from anywhere. The race track of Slušovice is one of top four in the Czech Republic. Its capacíty meets conditions to be placed in the Class A category; they can organize breeders competitions, as well as the classic horse races, including obstacle races of first category.

The Všemina hotels group is situated in a charming mountain valley with a lake, mere 15 minute ride from the regional city of Zlín. The hotel area offers a number of sports services in summer, as well as in the winter months. Services are available on individual, or group packages basis, program s and tourneys. It has a covered pool, sauna, tennis courts, offers horseback riding, mountain biking and other activities.

The city became famous for distilling the genuine Wallachian Slivovitz. Its aficionados meet here every year to participate in the folk tradition of plum harvest, where besides slivovitz, one take parta ke even in traditional plum dumplings feast. The other speciality of the town is making the traditional baked folk style figurines.
The local, late baroque style VIZOVICE CHATEAU was built in the French style between 1750 and 1770 according to plans of architect F. A. Grimm. Inside the chateau, you can see the vast collection of artistic furniture, china, hunting weapons, paintings, as well as the priceless décor of the chateau's chapel and the main hall. The surrounding park has both English and French design elements. Near the chateau is the late Baroque style hospital of Milosrdných Bratří (the Brothers of Mercy 1781). parish church with a rectory (18th century) and a Pillar ofthe Virgin Mary in the city square. The city is a birthplace of a musical composer A. Hába (1897-1973).
Vizovice are also the corporate home ofthe RUDOLF JELíNEK DISTILLERY (tel.: +420 577 686 111, www.rjelinek.cz). a famous distillery of alcoholic beverages, which has been around Vizovice from the end of the 16th century. At the beginning of the 18th century, they started using plums to distil beverages. From 1934, a number of liquors, under the "RUDOLF JELÍNEK" trade mark, have been made here. At the present time, the RUDOLF JELÍNEK DISTILLERY offers a com plete set of trade mark fruit distillates, which are made in the traditional way. The area offers visits of the production facilities and the visitors may benefit from services of the company's retail outlet; there is the opportunity to rent out the movie theatre for private parties, com pany events, presentations, or training seminars. The company area also offers, besides the traditional plum harvest festivities, the Wallachian festival, "Masters of Rock."
10. THE LOUČKA LOOK-OUT TOWER (20 km)

A steel-built look-out tower with 173 steps is situated 676 meters above sea level. The look-out tower is 55 meters high. It can be reached via a footpath from Loučka, where you turn in the direction of Vizovice and there is parking available on top of the hill, near the direction signs (near the blacktopped turn). From then, the footpath goes through a forest. The look-out tower is mere meters from there, but one must overcome a tremendous height difference (directly across the turn-off). 11. THE PLOŠTINA MEMORIAL (30 km)

The Ploština settlement was razed to the ground at the end of WWII, on April 9. 1945, by the withdrawing Germans for aiding the resistance fighters. In the 1970s, Ploština was declared a national cultural monument. Dominant of the entire place is a memorial to the victims of WWII from the Zlín district, which was built in 1975 on top of a small hill above the settlement, at the occasion of 30 years of Iiberation. The reminder of the tragedy is a chapel with names of all the murdered victims. One of the local houses has an exhibition devoted to the anti-fascist resistance in Zlín and surrounding area.



12. JASENNÁ - MIKULÁŠTÍK'S BAILIWICK (19 km)

Built in 1748 by bailiff Jiří Mikuláštík. This is one ofthe best preserved structure of its kind in the Wallachian region. Wooden, two-story bailiff's house number 60, is a typical log cabin style house with a balcony. At the present time, there is an exhibition on the Jasenná village's history, together with description of country life in the Wallachian region.

The city of Vsetín is spread on both banks of the Bečva river, dividing it to upper and lower towns. It is the start of many tourist excursions to the nearby Vizovice, Hostýn and Vsetín Hills. The region has many surviving log cabins from long ago, significant cultural heritage sites, specifically in Vsetín proper. The rich Wallachian cultural tradition is kept alive by folk songs and dance groups named Vsacan and Jasénka. It is a birthplace of painter brothers František (1885-1952) and Emil Hlavica (1887-1952) and the regional writer J. Misárik - Slavičínský (1881-1932).

The village is situated in a valley between the Vsetín hills and the Javorníky hills. It is a repository of typical folk architectural creativity, glassworks and offers excellent conditions for hiking, bicycle touring along the ridge of surrounding hills. You can see here those rare Wallachian wooden houses, which belong to the most valuable folk architectural creativity, preserved in the original location, galleries with the atelier of lIya Hartinger and the Crystalex Glassworks - there is a permanent exhibition of glass and you have the chance to visit the glass works.

15. VELKÉ KARLOVICE (57 km)

[img=1] This is an ideal spot for summer and winter sports and overall relaxation. There is the ancient forest called Razula - a state protected natural preserve is the only surviving reminder of beech woods (the trees are over 200 years old) in the watershed of upper Vsetínská Bečva, in the valley called Malá Hanzlůvka. Another spot worth your consideration may be the Karlovický church, the Karlovický bailiwick, or near by museum.
16. THE SÚKENICKÁ LOOK-OUT TOWER (90 km)
The look-out tower is situated 200 meters from the hotel Súkenická and offers a view ofthe Beskydy and Javorníky mountain ridge.
