Baťa villas and family houses 2

13. Villa of Mr. Ludvík Gerbec

author: Vladimír Karfík
year of completion (project): 1938 (1937)
location: Zlín, Zálešná, Zálešná I. 3222
owner and occupant: municipality Zlín/Centre of personal hygiene "Domovinka", Zálešná I. 3222

The villa of Mr. Ludvík Gerbec (in 1938 he was head of the calculating department of the Baťa firm in the Holland city Best and from 1939 he was head of the company in the American city Belcamp), belongs to one of the best works of Mr. Vladimír Karfík. The open space of the house is finished with flat ledges, which resemble prairie houses of F. L. Wright. The compositional whole of the house is marked by various utility modifications and extensions.

14. House of Mr. Vincence Krajča

author: Mr. Miroslav Lorenc
year of completion (project): 1935 (1934/35)
location: Zlín, Zálešná, tř. 2. května 2728
owner: private owner

The house of Mr. Krajča - a butcher in Zlín - was built along one of the main roads in the city. Previously it was meant to end a row of houses and was planned to be a "double-house". The first part of the house was built facing "Januštice" with condition that the second part, be built within 3 years - that however never happened. The house is quality evidence of preserved architecture of the 30s with notable details and facades.

15. House of Mr. František Lydie Gahura

author: Mr. František Lydie Gahura
year of completion (project): 1927, 1933 (1927, 1933)
location: Zlín, Kudlov 6
owner and occupant: private owner

The personal house of architect of Mr. František Lydie Gahura and his family is remarkable evidence of this personality. The first building stage was renovation of a village building and its agricultural hinterland. The second stage was the removal of gabled roofs in the residential part and the building of more bedrooms and a bathroom. Because of the process of Mr. Gahura's thoughts the house is a unique sight and to a certain point supports the Baťa architecture to local building tradition. The interior of the house had Gahura's plastics, a statue of a blacksmith been preserved and smaller versions of works from the Zlín town hall.

16. House of MUDr. Leopold Král

author: Mr. Miroslav Lorenc
year of completion: 1930
location: Zlín, Čepkov, Čepkovská 1792
owner: private owner

The project and building of the "not-so-large" family house was in 1930 and therefore it is the oldest known independent Lorenc building (from 1930 - 31 his first school buildings were designed after he joined the building department in the Baťa firm in June 1930).

17. Villa of Mr. Šťastný

author: no evidence
year of completion (project): 1940 (1939)
location: Zlín, Čepkov, Pod Stráněmi 743
owner and occupant: private owner

The house of director of a nylon factory and his family is classified to the group of director's villas designed by architect Mr. Vladimír Karfík. Even though in this case Mr. Karfík was not the actual author of the project, the architectonic concept and detail are so close to his types of villas that his part is almost presumable. Once again it is a non-functionalistic building. The house is perfectly preserved including all the details due to good maintenance.

18. Villa of Mr. Bohuslav Ševčík

author: Miroslav Lorenc
year of completion: 1935
location: Zlín, Lazy, Na Požáře 2906
owner: private owner

It was the house of the director of the Baťa machine works and his family. The basic spatial concept is based on the contrast of simple closed up prism and organically shaped terrace - a pedestal which optically turn the house to the garden. Noteworthy is also the back façade of the house with a large stairway. It is one of the most preserved works of Mr. Lorenc.

19. Villa of Dr. Hugo Förster

author: no evidence
year of completion (project): 1934 (1933)
location: Zlín, Lazy, Hluboká 2654
owner: private owner

It is a villa of the first notary working for the Baťa company, which was present at the settling of inheritance hearing of Mr. Tomáš Baťa. It is a unique building in Zlín, built in an expressionistic architectonic look. Whilst the external part of the house is more of a simple character, the interior bedrooms and stairway are typically historical. In some non-representative rooms elegant modern interior pieces can be found. Part of the architectonic look is a tiered and very good layout of the garden.

20. Example house of Mr. Berty Ženatý

author: Mr. Berty Ženatý
year of completion: 1928
location: Zlín, Nad Ovčírnou V / 1573
owner and occupant: private owners and the city Zlín

An above standard family house was built as an example of a "one-floor American villa" according to plans of Mr. Ing. Berty Ženatý and was owned by the Baťa supporting fund in Zlín. It opens an American model where emphasis is placed on practicality, economics and hygiene. In comparison with the house of Mr. Karfík and other Baťa houses, the house of Mr. Ženatý from a architectonic point of view, is less ascetic.

21. Villa of Mr. Karel Rojt

author: Mr. Vladimír Karfík
year of completion (project): 1937 (1936)
location: Zlín, Nad Ovčírnou, Nad Ovčírnou 3116
owner and occupant: private owners

Freely standing villa is part of an intimate residential complex which is bounded by a forest. The villa of the director of Baťa's shoemaker's workshops Mr. Karel Rojt belongs to a row of villa objects proposed by Mr. Karfík. It is distinguished by the divergence to the local landscape in two vertical directions which reminds one of F. L. Wright.

22. Family type house no. 633/3

author: Mr. Vladimír Karfík
year of completion: 1935
location: Zlín, Nad Ovčírnou, U Lomu 633
owner and occupant: private owner

An above standard Baťa "one-house" of a villa type was built at the same time as example houses of the architectonic competition. Mr. Vladimír Karfík used this type of house with a small stairway hall in many variations, primarily in the projects of smaller villas. The layout of the north façade evokes the early works of Mr. Adolf Loose.

23. Family type house " Benš - Jech"

author: Mr. Adolf Benš and Mr. František Jech
year of completion: 1935
location: Zlín, Nad Ovčírnou, U Lomu 631
owner and occupant: private owners

It is one of the four built example houses awarded in the international architectonic competition, advertised by the company Baťa in the year 1935. The aim of the competition was to find more types of company houses and even though none of the awarded objects were built over and over again, today they are rated as expositions of modern living. This house of the Prague architects received a 2nd prize in the competition.

24. Family type house "Vítek"

author: Mr. Antonín Vítek
year of completion: 1935
location: Zlín, Nad Ovčírnou, U Lomu 627
owner and occupant: private owners

It is one of the four built example houses awarded in the international architectonic competition, advertised by the company Baťa in the year 1935. This house of the Zlín architect received 4th prize in the competition.
